Sector / Industry
Sector
Standard & Poor's categorizes the stock market into 11 sectors, grouping the companies based on the characteristics of their primary business (where they derive the majority of their income from). These major sectors are:
- transportation
- technology
- financial
- energy
- utilities
- communications
- services
- consumer staples
- consumer cyclicals
- basic materials
- capital goods
Sometimes analysts break these major sectors into subsectors.
Sector Rotation
Depending on economic cycles or other factors, sectors will perform well at certain times and poorly at other times. Traders will often move money from one sector to another, in anticipation of the changing conditions. This movement of money between sectors is called sector rotation. Utilities and consumer staples are thought to be defensive sectors.
Industry
An industry is a finer categorization of business activity than the larger categorization into sectors. For example, companies which derive their primary revenue from the manufacture of semiconductors would be in the semiconductor industry. Categorizing companies into industries helps to compare companies of a similar nature.
